Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso would like to keep Dries Mertens with the club past the end of this season according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere del Mezzogiorno.

Mertens current contract with the club is due to expire in a couple months and talks have taken place over a contract extension but many reports have stated that these talks have stalled.

The Belgian national team player is one of a number of players that Gattuso would like kept around to build next seasons team around with other such players being Piotr Zielinski and Fabian Ruiz.

Inter, Chelsea, AS Monaco and Newcastle United are all reportedly interested in bringing him in on a free transfer with some reports stating Chelsea are leading the race to land him.

This season Mertens has made 29 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored 12 goals and provided a total of six assists for his teammates.
