Inter are just a step away from completing the signing of Dries Mertens on a free transfer according to a report in today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport.

The Belgian national team striker is yet to put pen to paper on a contract extension with Napoli and everything for the moment suggests he never will and he will therefore leave the club when his contract expires in about six weeks time.

Inter already have an agreement in place with the former PSV Eindhoven player which will see him earn €4.5 million a year. The signing on fee and bonuses are yet to be agreed upon though.

Napoli continue to hope that they can keep him at the club whilst Chelsea are also hopeful of being able to sign him but the report insists that Inter have a clear advantage.

This season Mertens has made 29 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists for his teammates.
