Dries Mertens is very close to signing a contract renewal with Napoli according to a report from Italian journalist and transfer market expert Alfredo Pedulla.

As per the report posted on Pedulla’s eponymous named website, despite receiving a very concrete offer to join Inter on a free transfer this Summer, Mertens now instead looks set to extend his stay at the Stadio San Paolo club, who he has been with since the Summer of 2013.

Mertens desire to stay in Naples, where he is loved as a true idol by the fans, is understood to have made the difference and Pedulla goes on to add that Napoli have slightly upped their most recent contract extension offer for him which consisted of €4 million a season, €500,000 in bonuses and a signing on bonus.

The Belgian national team attacker has made 29 appearances across all competitions to date this season, in which he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists for his teammates.
