German football expert and British broadcaster BT Sport pundit Raphel Honigstein has claimed that Liverpool are the team closest to signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

Werner is reportedly set to depart the German Bundesliga club in the coming months and has a number of clubs on his trail but Jurgen Klopp’s side appear to be the ones closest to landing the highly rated German national team forward, who has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe in recent seasons.

The 24-year-old has a variable release clause in his current contract with RB Leipzig which will be €60 million if they win the Bundesliga or €50 million if they fail to do so.

Liverpool aside, Inter have also been linked with making a move for him with reports having suggested the Nerazzurri will move for Werner if Lautaro Martinez departs for Barcelona.

“In recent weeks, Klopp has had several virtual meetings with Werner. For now, Liverpool seems to be the closest team to him,” Honigstein remarked whilst present in BT Sport’s studios.
