Former referee Massimo Chiesa has lauded referee Antonio Giua for making the right decision when it came to not awarding SPAL with a penalty in last night’s 4-0 loss to Inter.

Soon after Inter took the lead, SPAL winger Gabriel Strefezza broke through on goal and he and Inter captain and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic ended up colliding and this led to strong calls for a penalty from both SPAL players and their coaching staff.

Giua decided against awarding a penalty and in an interview with Italian news outlet CalcioMercato.com, Chiesa shared his belief that the 32-year-old referee made the right decision.

“There was contact between Handanovic and Strefezza but it followed a touch of the ball by SPAL’s winger who no longer had the ball close to him. It was the correct decision by the referee who done well to make the decision directly and then VAR rightly justified his decision,” he explained.

With thanks to last night’s result at the Stadio Paolo Mazza, Inter are now into second place in the Serie A table and find themselves just six points adrift of league leaders Juventus with five games and 15 points left to play for.

Inter’s next match comes this Sunday away to Italian capital city club Roma.
