Inter manager Antonio Conte has shared his delight following the team’s 4-0 triumph away to bottom placed SPAL which he believes the team took a step forward in from a psychological point of view.

“These are games where you have everything to lose but we had too an important a chance to approach those in front of us and get closer to qualifying for the Champions League,” he explained in an interview with Inter club broadcaster Inter TV, following the full time whistle at the Stadio Paolo Mazza.

“On other occasions we have failed, so I’m happy because I saw a step forward from a psychological point of view. I’m happy and this group deserves satisfaction for the work that they do.”

He was then asked about Inter’s improved performances in the past two matches which have come following some shaky form where they dropped multiple points.

“Honestly, only the results have changed. When you do not win, you are always judged negatively. Against Verona we had a good match and the data showed that.

“There is optimism because the work we do is important and we are also getting results in terms of statistics such as ball possession and the danger index.

“Maybe we are taking more risks now but we create a lot and score a lot. From today we also have the best defence and we have also had 18 different players score goals.”

The former Italian national team boss was then asked if there is anything that can be improved upon.

“There is always room for improvement. Even tonight we have not made the best use of all the chances created but I repeat, there is something to be satisfied about because these are easy matches only on paper.”

Next he was asked about Inter’s next match which comes against Roma this weekend and shared his hopes to recover a number of players currently sidelined by injury.

“We are fine, we will have to recover physically and I preferred to stay overnight here in Ferrara rather than returning to Milan at 4 am as we did after the Hellas Verona match.

“I hope to recover both Barella and Lukaku for Roma. Sensi is getting closer to returning whilst Moses is now also fine.”

In conclusion he was asked about the contribution made by the wing-backs in the game with Antonio Candreva and Cristiano Biraghi both scoring and Biraghi and Ashley Young assisting too. He also touched on the youngsters who came on.

“These are things that we try and try again so I am very happy.

“I’m also happy for Pirola, who made his debut. If he keeps his feet on the ground he will have an important future. The same goes for Esposito.”
