Referee Antonio Giua made the right decision by not awarding SPAL a penalty in last night’s 4-0 loss at home to Inter according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

In the 42nd minute, minutes after Inter took the lead through Antonio Candreva, Inter captain and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic collided with SPAL winger Gabriel Strefezza and this led to lots of calls for a penalty from SPAL’s players and coaching staff.

Giua’s decision was however justified, the report from the Milan based news outlet explains. Just before the duo collided, Strefezza hit the ball and although it was still in play, he could not have reached it and the collision was unavoidable given he hit the ball just before the two of them collided.

The report goes on to state that whilst it was not an easy decision for Giua to make, it was a convincing decision.
