A report from Italian media outlet PassioneInter has paid tribute to Inter legend Giacinto Facchetti, who would have turned 78 today.

Born in 1942 in Treviglio, Facchetti started his career with local side Trevigliese as a striker before signing for Inter in 1960, aged only 18. The Italian teenager’s role was changed to left-back by legendary coach Helenio Herrera. Facchetti would go on to spend the whole of his 18-year professional career with the Nerazzurri, retiring in 1978 at the age of 36.

Facchetti won five league titles, three Coppa Italia, two Supercoppa Italiana, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups throughout his career with the Nerazzurri, the report continues, making 639 appearances and scoring 76 goals. 56 of his goals were scored in Serie A, a record for a defender.

He also won the European Championship with Italy in 1968. Facchetti became the president of Inter in 2004, being the only former Inter player to hold this position, maintaining it until his death in 2006.
