Benfica are the latest club to have ignited an interest in signing Edinson Cavani according to a report in today’s print edition of Portuguese newspaper Record.

The experienced Uruguayan national team player became a free agent at the start of this month following the expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and he has been linked with a whole array of clubs across the world.

Inter have been linked with making a potential move for him as have several clubs in north America and the middle east.

Benfica want to sign Cavani but it will be very tough given his salary demands. At Paris Saint-Germain he was earning around €1.5 million a month but Benfica management are prepared to make an effort to sign him for manager Jorge Jesus.

This past season Cavani made 22 appearances across all competitions to date in which he scored seven goals and provided three assists for his teammates.
