Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has insisted that it is the club’s Plan A to sign club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to a contract extension.

The Gabon national team striker’s current contract with the Premier League club is due to expire at the end of next season and Arteta recently shared his hopes for things to be sorted out as soon as possible.

“I don’t know if there is an option for him to stay without a renewal,” he explained in a press conference yesterday.

“Our plan A is to extend his contract to make sure he can stay with us.”

With Aubameyang’s contract now having less than a year to run on it there has been no shortage of speculation when it comes to his future.

The former Borussia Dortmund player has been linked with potential moves to Inter and Barcelona among a whole array of other clubs.

This season the 31-year-old, who has been with his current employers since January 2018, has made 41 appearances across all competitions to date. In just under 3500 minutes, he has scored 25 goals and provided his teammates with two assists.
