Referee Piero Giaocmelli was right to not award Inter a penalty late on in last night’s goalless draw at home to Fiorentina according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

Inter dominated the game at San Siro and despite having loads of chances in both halves they simply could not find a way past Pietro Terracciano, who put in a man of the match performance in between the sticks for the visitors.

Nicolo Barella went to ground in the penalty box after a tussle with Gaetano Castrovilli but Giacomelli waved calls for a penalty away and VAR was not consulted. The reason for this is the feeling is that Barella was already going to ground.

The report from the Milan based news outlet goes on to state that Giacomelli made no serious errors during the match at San Siro but did fail to award yellow cards for two fouls deserving of them. The fouls in question were Ashley Young’s on Lorenzo Venuti and Franck Ribery’s on Nicolo Barella.
