Inter must thin out their midfield department before completing a move for Brescia midfielder Sandro Tonali and that this could allow Inter’s city rivals AC Milan to swoop in for him, according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta and sporting director Piero Ausilio have midfielders they wish to sell and until one or more are sold, they cannot add another midfielder to the mix in Tonali, who they have been courting for some time.

The report goes on to explain that Lucas Biglia and Giacomo Bonaventura’s contracts are set to expire and therefore AC Milan’s margins for signing him are wider but they must move quickly to beat the Nerazzurri.

Having pocketed €25 million from the sale of Suso, AC Milan are now able to match Inter’s €30 million offer for the 20-year-old.

Inter want to do a Nicolo Barella style deal for Tonali over 4 years whilst AC Milan could propose to pay the transfer fee over three years.

This season Tonali, who is widely regarded as one of the best Italian prospects out there at the moment, has made 33 appearances across all competitions to date. He has scored one goal and provided seven assists.
