Despite Inter coach Antonio Conte’s disparaging comments that “second place is just the first loser”, Atalanta are right to chase a runner-up spot, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report details how there are three reasons why Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini is working hard to finish second, ahead of Conte’s Inter and Simone Inzaghi’s Lazio.

The first is that it would be a historic achievement for Atalanta, who have never finished above 3rd, a record set last year. The second reason is that it is also impressive to finish second behind a squad like Juventus, considering their resources and wide support.

The final reason is that it would show that an underdog can compete with the big teams and the club would earn more as a result of a second-place finish, the report continues.

Conte is been criticised for his comments, and Inter will still work hard to secure the maximum number of points from the remaining games, with second still the goal.
