Inter are interested in signing Manchester United owned defender Chris Smalling, according to a report from Italian media outlet PassioneInter earlier today.

The report details how the 30-year-old English defender impressed this season whilst on loan with Roma, becoming one of the strongest defenders in the league with the Giallorossi. The Roman club have been hoping to sign the player permanently, but are currently experiencing a period of financial difficulty.

Smalling will return to Manchester immediately and not be available for the Roman club to use in the Europa League, according to a Tweet from Sky Sports Italia journalist Angelo Mangiante.

Roma didn’t reach an agreement with the Red Devils regarding a loan extension and so he won’t be able to feature against Sevilla. The Nerazzurri are considering signing the player to strengthen their defense as they are unconvinced by the performances of Slovakian defender Milan Skriniar, who has struggled to adapt to coach Antonio Conte’s tactical system.
