Italian journalist and director of TG La7 Enrico Mentana discussed Inter coach Antonio Conte’s outburst yesterday and the Nerazzurri’s strong 2-0 win over Atalanta in an interview with Italian media outlet FcInter1908.it.

“Yesterday Inter had the perfect match. In the season, they had some very beautiful early moments, ruined by bad shooting. Yesterday it was excellent from the kick-off to the final whistle.”

He was critical of Conte’s outburst in the post-match interviews. The 51-year-old Italian coach publicly criticised the Nerazzurri’s management, suggesting that they failed to defend either the squad or the coach when they were being criticised by the media during rough periods of the season.

“The last thing Conte should have done was to spoil the win, and the expectations ahead of the Europa League clash, with that very heavy outburst towards the club.

“But if he did it, not being an unbalanced man, something serious is going on. That’s why it’s important that the club clarifies and balances things within the next few hours, in a clear and transparent way. The opacity of the Icardi case is an example not to follow.”

Finally, Mentana touched on how Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic is one of the best performers in the squad and shouldn’t be sold under any circumstances. The player has been linked with a move away this summer due to various off-field issues.

“After Lukaku the player with the most consistent performances throughout the season has been Brozovic. Yet in some newspapers he is painted as an intractable ‘gypsy’ to be removed as soon as possible.

“But if he plays like that, I’d keep him with all my life, even with his little stunts, exaggerated by those who don’t love him or the team.”

Inter finish the 2019/20 Serie A season in second place, with 82 points. The Milanese club are one point behind winners and rivals Juventus, a potentially bittersweet feeling considering points that have been dropped throughout the season.
