Edinson Cavani is a step away from completing a move to Benfica according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The experienced Uruguayan national team player is set to join the Portuguese powerhouses on a free transfer having become a free agent after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired at the end of June.

Benfica have tabled a contract offer to Cavani that will see him earn €2.5 million a year, a significant decrease compared to what he was earning at Paris Saint-Germain, and are also prepared to offer him a generous signing on bonus of €8 million.

The former Napoli player drew strong links to both Inter and Roma in recent weeks and months and also drew links to clubs in north America and the middle east as well but looks set to continue his career in Portugual.

This past season Cavani made 22 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he scored seven goals and provided three assists for his teammates.
