Inter central defender Diego Godin has spoken on how things have changed for him at Inter after a difficult star following Inter’s 2-1 win over Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League quarter finals at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.
“If I’m not well mentally and physically things are difficult but after playing in a different system before I finally understood what the coach wanted.
“I have to make different moves than at Atletico or with Uruguay,” he explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia following the match.
He was then asked about the semi finals where Inter will face off against the winner of the match between Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Basel.
“First we have to figure out who we will playing against, then we will rest and enjoy a European semi final after 10 years.
“It won’t be easy to get to the final, but the final will be the next game because it’s a one off match. It will be difficult, the teams that are in the Europa League always play in the Champions League and we must respect them. We are doing well and we want to continue on this path.”
The experienced Uruguayan national team player was then asked where he thinks he plays best.
“On the field, always. If the coach wants, I will also play in the attack. I can play on the left or right, it is all the same to me.
“Today I feel good and I think we are doing well individually because we are playing as a team, both in defence and in attack. When the team is doing well, we all do better and improve our performances.”
In conclusion Godin spoke on what kept him going when he was not playing as regularly and what he was doing to try and get himself into the Nerazzurri team.
“For me, before the player, the human part is important, respect. I knew that if I didn’t play I had to work harder and I did that.
“I trained more and more in the lockdown, I came back stronger and I joined the team slowly respecting my teammates. If I am on the bench I have to respect those who play, even if as a player you always want to play. I always put the team first, the important thing is that Inter win.”
This season the experienced 34-year-old has made 34 appearances across all competitions to date. In his time on the park, which totals just over 2600 minutes, he has scored one goal and provided one assist too.
