Romelu Lukaku has downplayed the Europa League record he set in Inter’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the quarter finals of the competition.

The Belgian national team player’s goal in the first half of the game was his 31st of the season across all competitions and it was the ninth straight Europa League match which the former Manchester United player scored in which enabled him to surpass the record he matched last time out against Getafe.

“The goal record? Records are always good, but winning is much more important for us,” he began an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the match at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Lukaku proceeded to discuss Bayer Leverkusen and spoke on Inter’s many many missed chances during the game, which they could have easily won by a greater margin.

“Leverkusen are a good team, we did well, but we missed too many chances, we have to close the games out. For me the man of the match was Barella, he is growing, he has quality, he is truly an excellent player.”

Lukaku was then asked how the team are doing and was also asked about the upcoming Europa League semi final which Inter will face the winner of the match between Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Basel.

“Physically we are fine, but mentally we are also growing. We have to grow more because we have been so wrong.

“Now these matches are finals, there is only one chance to win. We now have a week to recover for the next game. We have to prepare well, it is a semi-final, it will be a great match and we must be ready.”
