Former Inter defender Mauro Milanese has shared his belief that Inter have what it takes to be able to win the Europa League this season.

“Inter have a great opportunity to take home the Europa League. The histories of the big clubs are made up of trophies won and trophies on the bulletin board. They give prestige to a club,” he began an interview with Italian news outlet FCInter1908.it.

“Winning would give Inter the chance to play in the Champions League as a protagonist. It would give the whole season a new face and it would mean having gone beyond expectations.”

Milanese then went on to speak about Inter manager Antonio Conte and what he has done in his first season in charge of Inter and he also spoke further on the prospect of Inter going all the way and winning the Europa League.

“As usual, he made the most of all the qualities of the players available to him. Despite the surprise of Lukaku and Lautaro, who did even better than expected, the team was not at the level of Juventus.

“In this anomalous season, it would be nice to close it by winning a trophy, which always increases the size of a club. It would also be nice for the fans.”

He proceeded to disucss the recent speculation in the media which has seen Barcelona captain Lionel Messi be linked with a potential transfer to Inter.

“I would like it very much, it would be very nice if he joined. It would be the repeat of the transfer that brought Ronaldo to Inter from Barcelona.

“I remember 60,000 season tickets were sold and they stopped selling them otherwise there would not have been enough tickets for the rest.

“Until his arrival children only shaved their heads due to lice but then they started to cut their hair to follow Ronaldo. Thanks to him, the shirt manufacturer also changed as we switched from Umbro to Nike.

“Certain champions shift fashions and interest. Maessi joining Inter would guarantee a good fight with Juventus. It would be nice to see CR7 and Messi challenge each other again.”

Milanese concluded by discussing Conte’s recent public outburst following Inter’s season finale against Atalanta.

“We all know he says what he thinks. If he has to say something, he does it frankly. By Coming to Inter as a Juventus icon, he made a very strong choice. These words seem to me to prepare a non-confirmation at the Nerazzurri, but my dream is to see him and Messi in Milan next year.”

The former Italian national team player had a one year spell with Inter as he spent the 1998/99 campaign on loan at Inter from fellow Serie A side Parma.

During his one and only campaign on the club’s books, the now 48-year-old made 24 appearances across all competitions and in his time on the park he scored a single goal.
