Former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti has shared his belief that Inter’s current owners Suning have the resources available to them to be able to sign Barcelona captain Lionel Messi.

Moratti has never hidden his desire to see Messi represent the Nerazzurri club and in recent weeks there has been no shortage of speculation regarding Messi and his future with Barcelona given his contract is due to expire at the end of the upcoming season.

“I am just a simple fan of Inter now, so I don’t have any inside information. Having said that, I do know that Suning have everything it takes to bring Messi to Milan, in terms of both resources and competence,” he explained in an interview with Italian news outlet Quotidiano Sportivo, which appeared in today’s print edition.

Moratti, who was Inter’s president and owner for close to 20 years, then went on to confess that he was wrong about Inter striker Romelu Lukaku, who has had a stellar first season with the club following a club record arrival from Manchester United.

“I got it wrong on Lukaku. In all honesty, I thought he was just physically strong and feared we would regret losing Icardi.

“Instead, Romelu is a champion, always helps his teammates and has good vision of the play. Antonio Conte was right to demand his signing and then did so well to improve him.”

Moratti then went on to discuss the Europa League, which Inter are currently in the semi final stage of and are just two victories away from winning the competition.

“Winning the Europa League won’t be easy, as there are four very competitive sides left, but I do hope Inter can be the next Italian club to lift a European trophy.”
