Former Inter president Massimo Moratti discussed Juventus’ Champions League loss to Lyon and the head coach situation at the Bianconeri in an interview with Italian newspaper Quotidiano.net yesterday.
“Well, it’s one thing to be eliminated by PSG, it’s another to go home against the seventh place of the French league. Honestly, there’s no comparison.”
He commented on Italian coach Maurizio Sarri, who was dismissed by the Turin based club quickly after crashing out of Europe.
“A friend said to me, if you’re an atheist, you can’t go preaching in the Vatican. But you can’t judge from outside, you must know the dynamics of the locker room. Anyway, at least Sarri won the Scudetto.”
The Italian businessman thought that the Bianconeri were putting a lot of faith in new appointment Andrea Pirlo, who has never coached a squad properly before. He was chosen to be the Juventus U-23 coach a week before accepting the head coach role.
“I’m very intrigued by this choice. Andrea Agnelli was brave.”
Finally, Moratti dismissed the comparisons made between Juventus’ appointment of Pirlo and Barcelona’s appointment of Pep Guardiola or Real Madrid’s decision to place their trust in Zinedine Zidane.
“Pirlo deserves the companions for his history as a winner, it’s also true that the Frenchman in Madrid was Ancelotti’s deputy and coached the second team, like Pep at Barca.
“Instead Pirlo has no experience on the bench and that’s why it will be interesting to check the outcome of the decision.”
Inter finished second in the league in the 2019/20 season on 82 points, only one point behind Sarri’s Juventus. Small margins made the difference and coach Antonio Conte hopes to close the gap with the Turin based club next season.
