Inter central defender Stefan de Vrij has shared his delight with all the plaudits he has rightfully earned during the course of the 2019/20 season.

The Dutch national team defender has been Inter’s star defender this campaign and his efforts in Serie A were also recognised with him being named the best defender in Serie A for the 2019/20 campaign.

“I am reasonably satisfied with my season in which I played consistently,” the former Feyenoord player told Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf.

“It is a great honour to receive so many compliments and especially in this country that can boast so many great defenders in its history. Of course things could go even better tonight against Shakhtar Donetsk.”

Despite his stellar defensive performances, de Vrij has struggled to start as of late for the Dutch national team and he stressed that despite this, he has a good relationship with national team boss Ronald Koeman and still feels important.

“It makes sense that we all want to play, but it’s Koeman who decides. I have a great relationship with Koeman. In recent years we have had several telephone calls and even if I have played less, I feel an important bond in the team.”

The 28-year-old joined Inter on a free transfer ahead of the 2018/19 season after his contract with fellow Serie A side Lazio expired.

Since joining Inter, de Vrij, who has a contract until 2023, has made 80 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored six goals and tallied five assists.
