Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has revealed that he is having nightmares about the prospect of Lionel Messi departing the club.

Messi’s contract with the Blaugrana is due to expire at the end of the upcoming season and various reports in the media have stated that the Argentine national team attacker could depart the club, where he has spent the entirety of his career so far, for a fresh challenge.

Messi has been linked with potential moves to the likes of Inter, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain and Font has insisted that Messi must be kept at the club and that goes for even after his playing days are over in the coming years.

“Lionel’s possible departure? I think there is a real risk and this gives me nightmares. Messi is an asset to the club, the most important player in the history of the club,” Font explained in an interview with Spanish news outlet Marca.

“The Messi-Barça association must go further. Even when he stops playing. Bartomeu is disconnected from reality. I don’t know if he lives in a parallel world or what. His words were very disappointing. It was irresponsible not to resign and put one’s own interests ahead of those of Barcelona.”

During the 2019/20 season the 33-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the best footballers of all time, made 44 appearances across all competitions. In his time on the pitch, Messi scored 31 goals and provided 26 assists for his teammates.
