Inter central defender Diego Godin has insisted that he and his teammates will give their all in order to win the Europa League final tonight against Sevilla.

“We talk about everything between us. At the moment we are very focused on the match, on what we need to do on the pitch and on the right tactics to adopt,” he remarked in an interview with Inter’s official club broadcaster Inter TV, ahead of the match, which is scheduled to kick off at 21:00 local time in Cologne, Germany.

“You feel the right enthusiasm and the right energy for a game of this calibre. From kick-off we will have to give everything we have, putting into practice what has been prepared so far and showing heart and passion on the pitch, in order to express the best version of ourselves.

“We owe it to ourselves, to the staff who always accompany us every day and to the fans who have never failed to give us support, even though they are not physically close to us.”

Godin, who spent a large chunk of his playing career in Spain, was then asked whether this Sevilla side remind him of more of a Barcelona/Real Madrid kind of team or a team like Getafe, who Inter overcame in the Europa League last 16.

“Sevilla are Sevilla. We know the value of the team and we are aware of the beautiful game they know how to play, especially in contexts like that of a final.

“For this reason they have won many editions of the Europa League over the years. In any case, we really want to bring the cup to Milan, we owe it to the fans and to ourselves, for the work put in every day so far.

“I repeat, we will have to play with a lot of heart in the game in order to prevail.”

In conclusion, the Uruguayan national team player was asked about how different it will be to play such a match at this time of the year due to the global COVID-19 pandemic which greatly disrupted the football calendar.

“It is certainly a unique situation. It has been a different year from the others and difficult for many people who have suffered from the pandemic.

“For doctors and healthcare professionals in particular, it was tough. That is life, this is football, which remains something beautiful and important for the fans, but we need to understand what kind of situation we are still facing.”

This season Godin has made 35 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored one goal and provided a single assist for his teammates.
