A report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has praised referee Danny Makkelie for his officiating in the Europa League final yesterday, which Inter lost 3-2 to Sevilla.

The report details how there were many fouls and protests throughout the game, but the Dutch referee still managed to impress in the important decisions. Three minutes in Nerazzurri striker Romelu Lukaku was fouled in the area by Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, with both the awarded penalty and yellow card being correct decisions.

17 minutes in, Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella looked to swing in a cross but it was blocked by a jumping Diego Carlos, with the ball glancing off of the player’s tucked in arm. Makkelie decided to whistle for a corner and not give a penalty, even booking coach Antonio Conte for his protests. The decision was again correct, due to the fact that the player’s arm is fully tucked in and the distance was so close.

Only two small mistakes for Makkelie, the report highlights. The first was 19 minutes into the game, when Danilo D’Ambrosio fouled Lucas Ocampos, which deserved a yellow card. The other mistake was the decision not to book Joan Jordán for holding onto Barella’s shirt in the 49th minute.
