Newly promoted side Spezia president Gabriele Volpi discussed Barcelona star Lionel Messi and the possibility of seeing him sign for Inter in an interview in yesterday’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

First, he touched on a phone call he had with the 33-year-old Argentine star.

“If he called me? No, come on… I hosted him on a boat, I’m also friends with Mascherano.”

He also highlighted how he would be happy if the six-time Ballon d’Or winner signed for the Nerazzurri, who are incredibly keen to bring the player to Milan.

“If he goes to Inter, I’d be happy because I’m a bit of an Inter fan. And because all of Italian football would benefit. Would I go back to the stadium for Spezia-Inter with Messi there? 100%.”

The 33-year-old Argentine star is currently unhappy at Barcelona and has told the club that he is interested in leaving due to the direction of the team and the board’s decisions after the sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi’s contract expires with the Catalan side at the end of next season and so there’s a genuine risk of him leaving on a free transfer next summer. As such, some reports suggest Barcelona may be willing to listen to offers for the star if he still wants to leave by the start of squad training.
