Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti has shared his belief as to why he thinks Inter abandoned their pursuit of Brescia and Italian national team central midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Inter appeared set to bring the highly rated youngster to the club but the player now appears set to join the Nerazzurri’s crosstown rivals AC Milan instead, much to the disappointment of Inter fans around the globe.

Personal terms had been agreed with Tonali but Inter did not reach an agreement with Brescia over him. AC Milan have taken advantage of this and have reportedly agreed a deal with Brescia president and owner Massimo Cellino for the 20-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the best young Italian talents out there at the moment..

“Conte is also doing the Milan transfer market. I don’t think Maldini overtook Marotta in the Tonali race. It is more likely that Tonali was not enough for Conte who felt he was too young to compete,” he explained in an interview with Italian news outlet CalcioMercato.com.

“He had already made it clear before, but since there was the meeting with the club, the management has shifted to players with much more experience. Conte prefers Kanté to Tonali and for the immediate future he is right.

“It is not that AC Milan have surpassed Inter with their offer. In fact it is on the contrary as they have proposed a less immediate payment formula. It is Inter who left Tonali race to follow the instructions of their coach.”

Sconcerti then went on to discuss what he thinks Inter are becoming with the signing they have made and signings they hope to make.

“With Hakimi, Vidal and Kanté, Inter is becoming a big European team and clearly the best Italian team. Above all, Conte’s new monopoly on the technical side is emerging.”

He concluded by adding: “This is not the Marotta transfer market. It’s just Conte’s.”
