Gianfelice Facchetti, the son of legendary Inter player Giacinto Facchetti, has spoken on his father and how he still remains relevant 14 years on from his death.

Facchetti is widely regarded as one of Inter’s greatest ever servants. He spent the entirety of his 18 year playing career on the books of the Nerazzurri club between 1960 and 1978 and he made just shy of 650 appearances across all competitions for the club.

Facchetti won four Serie A titles in 1963, 1965, 1966 and 1971, one Coppa Italia in 1978, two European Cups in 1964 and 1965 and two Intercontinental Cups in 1964 and 1965.

Upon his retirement Facchetti held many management positions at Inter including technical director, vice-chairman and chairman. He passed away aged 64 following a battle with pancreatic cancer in 2006.

“On our part, there is the feeling of being very lucky, because despite the changes in ownership there have always been people who have carried on this thread of memory, not in a stale, occasional way, but also in everyday life, where I think it’s more interesting,” Facchetti junior explained in an interview with Italian daily newspaper Tuttosport, which appeared in today’s print edition.

Facchetti junior proceeded to speak about how he educated Inter youngster’s of his father during the lockdown period.

“In the youth academy I can guarantee that there is always a lot of attention on the part of those who educate children in involving us.

“I can give an example. During the lockdown period I had virtual meetings with young people to make some aspects of the history of Inter and Giacinto known, but also to think about what was happening. Then in the theatre, when we do something, they never miss their presence.

“For Giacinto there is a non-superficial reverence. Then there is the more passionate and genuine aspect of the fans who keep the memory of him very alive over time and never miss opportunities to keep him closer, despite the past 14 years.”
