Former Inter defender Tarcisio Burgnich discussed the Nerazzurri’s transfer market moves so far, the work of coach Antonio Conte and the performances of Christian Eriksen and Milan Skriniar in an interview with Italian media outlet FcInter1908.it earlier today.

“I think Conte is among the top coaches in Italy and also in the world. He has qualities to lead this team, despite some differences in terms of communication. It is important that the players follow him, because much of Inter’s fate depends on them. The team that Conte has for me, at least at the moment, is not of the highest level. He has good players, but not so they can dominate as they have done in the past.”

The 81-year-old Italian commented on what he still expects from the Nerazzurri’s transfer market.

“I hope that they will sign players that can allow them to compete with Juventus. There are few great talents around and some of them are unlikely to change teams. At Inter you need people with certain attributes, able to handle the pressure in an environment that wants to win. It is not easy.”

He thought that former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen was one of the players who could help Inter close the gap with Juventus.

“I think so. As I was saying, there are no great players around. In Messi there is one. He is not able to make the team win on his own, but he is still valid and will be useful to the cause given the qualities available.”

The former Inter defender spoke positively of Milan Skriniar but also understood that the Nerazzurri’s issue currently isn’t their defense.

“He is a good player too, but what Inter lack at the moment are great players in the attacking departments.”

Finally, Burgnich discussed his desire to see Barcelona star Lionel Messi sign for the Nerazzurri in the future. The 33-year-old will stay with the Blaugrana for next season because he doesn’t want to take the club to court.

“I hope so with all my heart. If Inter want to get certain results, they have to get those kinds of players. It would be a dream.”

Burgnich spent 12 years of his career with the Nerazzurri, from 1962 to 1974. He won four league titles, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups in that time.
