Inter central defender Diego Godin is one step away from joining Cagliari on a free transfer according to a report from the online edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The 34-year-old Uruguayan national team player is close to moving to the Rossoblu club on a permanent basis. Cagliari have overcome competition from a number of sides including Rennes to win the race to sign the former Atletico Madrid captain.

Godin joined Inter on a free transfer last Summer and really struggled initially before cementing a place in the team near the end of the season.

Reports had suggested that he was set to stay but Cagliari have come quite literally out of nowhere and it now remains to be seen when they will be able to get the deal over the line.

In the recently concluded 2019/20 season, Godin, who is still contracted to Inter until 2022, made 36 appearances across all competitions, in which he scored two goals and provided a single assist for his teammates.
