Former AC Milan forward Andriy Shevchenko discussed the title race next season, the current position of the Rossoneri and the situation surrounding Barcelona star Lionel Messi in an interview in yesterday’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The title race will be more interesting. Conte is working well, the team are competitive, they have already challenged Juve and I expect a closer season.

“Because there’s also Lazio, there’s Napoli, there’s Atalanta, an incredible team. And then there is Milan, who have strengthened themselves.”

The Ukrainian did not think that the Rossoneri would be able to get involved in next season’s title race.

“It still seems early. I think the goal should be to return to the Champions League.”

He touched on what AC Milan are still missing and how they can improve.

“Confirm the good parts of a complicated season, it will be a decisive year to be able to say, we are here too, we can come back with the greats.”

Finally, Shevchenko gave his thoughts about the case of Lionel Messi. The Argentine star requested a move away from the Blaugrana earlier this summer and fought with the club regarding his contract and an early release clause.

Inter, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City were all incredibly keen to secure the player’s signature. Eventually, he agreed to stay at the club as he didn’t want to take them to court.

“Messi is a footballing god but the years pass for him too and in the last two seasons Barça’s results have not been very good.

“I think he still has a great desire to win and time flies. In any case, after this season in Barcelona they will have to rebuild and it will not be easy. Football lives on cycles, whoever know that know.”

AC Milan took advantage of the Nerazzurri’s failure to close out the deal for Brescia starlet Sandro Tonali and secured the player’s signature last week.
