Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti discussed the possible sale of Inter defender Diego Godin to Cagliari in an interview with Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb on Saturday.

“The first part of last year was done without Godin. Inter need to sell him now, I don’t think that his transfer solves their economic problems.”

He also highlighted how the club have other issues as well.

“But they also have many problems in midfield. They have only one starter in Barella, we will see if Vidal or Kantè will come.”

The 34-year-old Uruguayan veteran, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2022, joined the club on a free transfer last summer, after his contract expired with longtime home Atletico Madrid.

The player struggled to adapt to coach Antonio Conte’s tactical system and seemed shaky at the back, mostly due to his unfamiliarity in playing in a three-man defense.

Godin was often benched in favour of 21-year-old Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni, and his high wages mean that the Milanese club would rather sell him than use him as a rotational squad player.

The 34-year-old made 36 appearances across all competitions last season for the Milanese club, for a total of 2800 minutes. In that time, he scored two goals and provided one assist.
