Lautaro Martinez could soon sign a new contract with Inter after the transfer window closes according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Argentine’s agents met with Inter yesterday and although Beto Yaque described the meeting as a courtesy visit, this report meanwhile claims that the purpose of the meeting was to lay the foundations for a possible contract renewal.

Since the parties last met last winter, a lifetime seems to have passed. Real Madrid had been linked but Gazzetta dello Sport claim they never had any interest whilst Barcelona, who were strongly interested, are now a distant memory.

Negotiations over a new contract will not be easy. Inter are unwilling to go beyond €5 million plus add-ons a year but the player’s representatives expect him to be given the Romelu Lukaku and Christian Eriksen treatment and given around €7 million a year.

The parties could however meet in the middle at €6 million a year and will allow the player to manage a large portion of his image rights. Inter also want to try and remove the €111 million release clause that is in his current contract.

The report goes on to include that it is almost impossible that Barcelona will come back in for the 23-year-old.
