Former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi discussed Nerazzurri defender Alessandro Bastoni in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Inter legend then highlighted two particular players who he thinks will become the strongest defenders in Italy next season.
“For the way he interprets the role, from marking to paying attention, from reading situations to shoing leadership, in Italy Giorgio Chiellini always remains the main reference point.
“Having said that, choosing who will be the best defender next season is very complicated, let’s say that I expect the definitive arrival of Bastoni and Romagnoli.”
Bergomi expected Bastoni’s growth to be quick and strong.
“Let’s take Bastoni, his growth is seen by everyone but I’m sure he can do even better and immediately become one of the strongest in Europe.”
The Italian commented on how the 21-year-old Italian defender’s tactical flexibility in defense is helpful for both club and country.
“In Conte’s three-man defense of , he has proven to have unique characteristics and today many coaches like to start with three and then move to four during the game. Alessandro is perfect for this, with Conte but also in Mancini’s Italy.
“You can see it clearly and you are immediately impressed by the personality and the quality of the player.”
Finally, Bergomi touched on some issues that Bastoni needs to iron out if he is to grow into one of the strongest defenders in Serie A and Europe.
“But now he has to improve his defending during open play. Sometimes last season he got caught behind with space behind him and in a team like Inter that loves to push and attack the game you have to be careful not to concede too much space behind.”
The 21-year-old Bastoni, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2023, made 33 appearances across all competitions last season under coach Antonio Conte, for a total of 2560 minutes.
In that time, he scored twice, provided one assist and helped the side keep nine clean sheets, being an exciting option for the 51-year-old Italian coach.
