Cagliari’s new sporting director Pierluigi Carta discussed the negotiations for Inter defender Diego Godin in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia earlier today.

“Let’s see, it’s a long and tiring negotiation for an important player to which a little bit is always added. We hope that by Tuesday or Wednesday we can add the decisive piece to bring a player who can give us so much experience and quality.

“The idea came from president Tommaso Giulini, which we directors shared.”

The 34-year-old Uruguayan veteran, who is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2022, will leave the Lombardy capital after only one season, due to the fact that he struggled to adapt to coach Antonio Conte’s tactical system and three-man defense.

Godin was one of the higher paid players in the squad, and considering the emergence of Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni last season, he didn’t manage to justify his high costs.

With the 34-year-old departing, the Nerazzurri are able to sign Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal, offering the Chilean slightly higher wages than what the Uruguayan was receiving.

Godin made 36 appearances across all competitions last season for Inter, for a total of 2800 minutes. In that time, he scored two goals, provided one assist and helped the side keep 13 clean sheets.
