Legendary former Inter captain Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Bergomi has shared his belief that Inter new boy Arturo Vidal is capable of playing in multiple roles.
After a long courtship Inter finally got their man yesterday with him reportedly putting pen to paper on a two year deal with an option to a third year worth a reported €6 million a year.
Vidal is no stranger to Italian football having previously played for Inter’s arch rivals Juventus and he is also no stranger to Inter boss Antonio Conte either, who was his manager at Juventus.
“Conte sees him as an attacking midfielder, but he’s a complete midfielder,” Bergomi explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia on Monday afternoon.
“In Inter-Barcelona, in Milan, he was one of the two in midfield. He can be used in multiple roles including if Conte’s tactical idea is for him to enter the box and score, but he can also play as a normal midfielder.”
The former Italian national team defender, who spent the entirety of his playing career with Inter, then spoke on the impact that Vidal’s arrival at the Nerazzurri could have on January transfer window recruit Christian Eriksen, who has already struggled for playing time at the club.
“Eriksen? I wouldn’t even want to go back to him. Controversy arose for what I said in the past, but when I saw him for the first time I thought ‘this is not a Conte player.’ That’s all. And in fact he has found little space [under Conte].”
