Former Chilean national team manager Claudio Borghi has shared his belief that Inter will not regret their signing of Arturo Vidal from Barcelona.

After over one year of courting him, Inter finally wrapped up the deal to sign Vidal yesterday with it widely reported that he has signed a two year contract with an option to a third year.

“In the youth academies his character sometimes betrayed him. He was too emotional and impetuous,” he began an interview with Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which appeared in yesterday’s print edition.

“He was a central defender, I had predicted that he would become the best Libero in the world. The move to Europe made him a multifunctional midfielder, but I don’t know if he has earned it.”

Next he was asked whether given he is now 33-years-old whether he can be as dominant for Inter as he was for Juventus many years ago.

“On a physical level he is totally intact and has very good ‘genetic’ qualities. He will have no problems, his ability to give everything in every match does not change. Inter will not regret signing him. Conte always plays with many in the middle, he can be even more of a protagonist if he is the most advanced.”

Next Borghi spoke on what he is expecting from Alexis Sanchez, who completed a permanent switch to Inter recently following a loan spell last season.

“He can do different things from Lukaku and Lautaro. I want to see him in a team that wants and protects him. There has always been a sporting rivalry between him and Vidal since their days at Colo Colo. I don’t know if they are close friends, but now they will have a closer coexistence.”

He then spoke briefly on Inter striker Lautaro Martinez and explained: “Sometimes I wonder if he is in the right situation. I do not know if he the most suitable partner for Lukaku.”

In conclusion he was asked about Christian Eriksen and whether he would find a space for him to play if he were the Inter manager.

“Clubs sometimes buy players for how they played elsewhere. You have to think about whether they fit your style. Maybe he’s not a Conte style player and if you don’t feel important, your performance drops.”
