Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has identified Manchester United’s Chris Smalling as the top option to replace Slovakian defender Milan Skriniar, should the player be sold to Tottenham, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report details how the 25-year-old has been the centre of attention in Inter’s outgoing transfer market for some time now, with the North London club keen to acquire the Slovakian.

Skriniar’s departure depends on if Spurs can reach the requested fee of €50 million, the report highlights, and currently Jose Mourinho’s team have only offered around €35 million.

Should Skriniar be sold by the Nerazzurri, then Marotta would look to sign the 30-year-old Smalling as a replacement.

The Englishman impressed last season whilst on loan with Roma, but the Giallorossi failed to make the move permanent, despite the player’s wishes to remain.

Smalling is now ahead of Schalke’s Ozan Muhammed Kabak in the club’s priority list.
