Inter coach Antonio Conte discussed the Nerazzurri’s thrilling 4-3 win over Fiorentina earlier this evening in an interview with Italian broadcaster DAZN after the game.

“Three important points, but it is right to make the correct evaluations. It’s good to have scored four goals and to have created a lot, but we must improve in the defensive phase.

“The guys know it, balance is the basis of everything and today we weren’t.”

The 51-year-old Italian coach commented on what work the squad need to do in regard to the defensive phase, and how certain factors meant today’s performance was slightly sub-par.

“We want to work on the defensive aspect, we are always thinking of going forward, bringing pressure with the ball carrier.

“There is room for improvement, but today for the first time Bastoni was playing in the center and Kolarov made his first appearance, they are mitigating factors to take into account. However, we brought too many men to attack, allowing counter attacks.”

The former Juventus and Chelsea coach touched on the performance of Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen. The 28-year-old joined the club from Tottenham in January but so far has struggled to impress in Milan.

“We work with Christian as we work with others. He, compared to when he arrived, has increased his work rate and is playing in his ideal position. He had a good game.

“We work with him, we know that there are qualities in there and we try to get them out, sometimes you succeed at first, sometimes not. But you have to have confidence and I have it.

“He is a good guy, he trains very well. I hope that a spark will be ignited that will light him up in a definitive way.”

Finally, Conte spoke about how he needs to appreciate the team’s growth process and not only focus on winning.

“It is a reflection that I made after my first year here. We often focus so much on having to win at all costs that we forget about the path we have to take to become heroes like we were last year.

“Seeing footballers grow in every way, whether they win or not, is the most beautiful thing.

“And a coach has to enjoy it. I have to learn how to do it. Last year we gained credibility, both in Italy and internationally. The team today showed great desire, giving joy to the fans, I am proud of them.”

Inter started their season off with an important three points against a hungry Fiorentina side, who took the Milanese club to two draws in their meetings last season.

Antonio Conte’s squad will face Benevento next on Wednesday evening, before an important game against Simone Inzaghi’s Lazio next weekend.
