Inter’s midfield was lacking something during Saturday’s Serie A season opening 4-3 win over Fiorentina according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

It was especially noticeable at Fiorentina’s second goal, which was scored by Gaetano Castrovilli. Marcelo Brozovic and Christian Eriksen unsuccessfully chased him but if Inter had someone like N’Golo Kante it could have been a different story as he would not have stopped and let him get on the end of Franck Ribery’s cross.

In short it is difficult for Brozovic and Eriksen to coexist on the pitch together and Inter suffer as a result of them sharing the pitch together.

The recent arrival of Arturo Vidal has however added some weight and substance to the midfield department and thanks to his arrival Inter manager Antonio Conte has a number of different tactical options.

If Kante were signed, he could play in the midfield with Barella and Vidal in a 3-5-2 system. Alternatively Inter could play a 3-4-1-2 with Vidal in the midfield two or as the attacking mifielder with there being a number of different combinations who could play behind him.
