Legendary former Inter player and captain and current vice-president Javier Zanetti believes that Inter have been handed a balanced group in the Champions League group stage.

Earlier on today Inter were drawn into group B in which they will play against Real Madrid, who have the most Champions League wins of any club with 13, Ukrainaian powerhouses Shakhtar Donetsk and Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach.

“It is certainly a very balanced group, but I think we have a good chance. We have to face every match aware of the difficulties that will arise, but always with the ambition of doing something important,” Zanetti explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, a short time ago.

Zanetti, who spent almost his entire career at Inter, then went on to insist that Inter must be focused in all of the games that they play in the group stage, with games to commence on October 20.

“Not only Real Madrid, but also the other two are able to compete in the same way. This is why we must be very focused in every match.

“The Champions League is a competition in which you have to understand the moments of the team and we hope that we can be in the best condition.”

The former Argentine national team player, who has made the most appearances for Inter in club history, then concluded by discussing Inter’s European journey last season which saw them finish as runners up in the Europa League.

“Certainly the fact that we have reached the Europa League final gives us awareness that the path we are taking is very positive.

“We just missed out on winning it but this means that we have laid the foundations to be able to compete and be protagonists. This must be a starting point to always improve season after season.”
