Former Inter defender Diego Godin discussed Cagliari’s 5-2 defeat to Atalanta and his departure from the Nerazzurri in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia after the game.

“Those who enter the pitch always try to give everything out there. Atalanta has made the difference, they have so much quality.

“We have to improve, it’s a growing team and many guys had never played in Serie A before. For the goal I am not happy because the result always comes first.”

He touched on what Cagliari need to improve on.

“We’ll try to work with the coach to understand what he asks tactically to be closer and more clinical. Then individually we have to improve.”

The 34-year-old Uruguayan veteran discussed whether he feels like a reference point for some of his less experienced teammates.

“I have to improve in team dynamics. It was hard against Atalanta, they are very strong. We have to work on the positive and negative things and then think about the next game.”

Finally, Godin commented on his recent departure from Inter to the Rossoblu after only one season in Milan with the Nerazzurri.

“It was what it was. The coach told me what he thought and what he wanted and I wanted to be sold and the first choice was Cagliari and I’m happy.

“I have the will and the strength to help and I think I can also grow in this team. I think we can do good things.”

The 34-year-old Uruguayan defender signed for the Nerazzurri on a free transfer last summer, after his contract expired with Atletico Madrid.

The player struggled to adapt to coach Antonio Conte’s tactical system, not being experienced playing in a three-man defense or with the ball at his feet.

Godin was often benched in favour of 21-year-old Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni, showing how he had fallen in Conte’s hierarchies. He terminated his contract with Inter early to join the Rossoblu.
