Chelsea and France national team striker Olivier Giroud has revealed that he has been close to moving to Serie A recently and laid out his plans for his career, which is now into its twilight years.

The 34-year-old striker was strongly linked with potential moves to both Inter and Lazio in the most recent January transfer window but neither club were ultimately able to come to an agreement with Chelsea over him.

Upon the closure of the January transfer window, Chelsea took up their option to extend Giroud’s contract until the end of the current season.

“I’ve been close to moving to Serie A. They appreciate experienced players there, but the transfer didn’t materialise. For the future we will see what happens, I will decide by evaluating the opportunities I will have,” he explained in an interview with French broadcaster RMC Sport show ‘Top of the Foot’ yesterday afternoon.

As for his plans for what remains of his career, the former Arsenal man went on to explain: “I’m not ruling out anything, but for now I don’t see me returning to Ligue 1. I’d like to play at the highest level in Europe for another two or three years, then maybe I’ll go to the United States.”

This season Giroud, who has been with Chelsea since January 2018, has made three appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored a single goal.
