Inter striker Romelu Lukaku has shared his belief that the idea that he is misunderstood dates back to his spell with Premier League club Chelsea.
Lukaku joined Chelsea in the Summer of 2011 from Belgian powerhouses Anderlecht but found playing opportunities at Stamford Bridge hard to come by and was thus never given the chance to show himself off, despite very fruitful spells out on loan at West Bromwich Albion and Everton.
Lukaku ended up joining Everton permanently in 2014 and had three prolific years there before earning a big money move to Manchester United, where he spent two years prior to moving on to Inter in the Summer of 2019 in a club record €65 million deal.
“Am I misunderstood? This image was created when I went to play for Chelsea,” he explained in an interview with Belgian state broadcaster Rtbf, which was aired a short time ago.
“When I got there and failed, I had to show off to prove something, but it didn’t work for the national team. I wanted to be on top but I couldn’t. I was so focused on what to do on the pitch that I didn’t care what people said about me.”
The 27-year-old striker has made three appearances across all competitions to date this term, in which he has scored three goals.
