Legendary Inter defender and former club captain Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Bergomi has shared when he thinks a team wins a derby match.
“You win a derby at the exact moment you refuse the idea of losing it,” he explained in an interview with Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which appeared in today’s print edition.
He was then asked how it is possible to prepare for the derby with just one group training session as has been the case for both clubs due to their squads being depleted due to players being away on national team duty.
“It is logical to think that the problems of the last week will have an impact. Inter will have important absences in defence, which has already highlighted problems but Conte will be very good at getting the team up for the match by exploiting this situation.”
Next Bergomi was asked whether Marcelo Brozovic or Christian Eriksen should be handed the start at San Siro against the Rossoneri, who are currently sitting at the top of the Serie A table.
“Brozovic seemed destined to go away, but once you kept him – and playing with a three-man midfield – someone like Marcelo must always play.
“I don’t know about Eriksen, I don’t know if he needs to be stimulated or pampered. In the Premier League there was less tactics and his quality emerged, here he still has to adapt.”
In conclusion Bergomi was asked about what certainties he thinks Inter have heading into the match against their city rivals, which will be the first time they meet this season.
“Lukaku and Lautaro have definitely proved to be extraordinary and decisive players.”
Bergomi spent his entire career with Inter between 1979 and 1999 and made a grand total of 754 appearances across all competitions, an appearance total for the club bettered only by Javier Zanetti.
