Inter coach Antonio Conte discussed the Nerazzurri’s disappointing 2-1 derby defeat to AC Milan in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia after the game.
“As I said at the press conference, this is not the time to go and see extreme situations in football. Disappointed to lose a match where we created a lot and where Milan were lucky.
“I saw so much effort, the guys cared so much. Two mistakes, then a lot of chances to draw and win. Congratulations to them.”
He commented on what he did not like in the game.
“We create many opportunities, but we have to be better, cold and cynical to take advantage of them. But, I repeat, I have nothing to complain about, positive attitude and determination to the end.
“We have not been lucky.”
The 51-year-old Italian coach also highlighted how it is important to have a certain solidity in the squad.
“Of course, it always takes balance. Inevitable that playing with two wing backs who are actually two wingers like Perisic and Hakimi maybe we’ll pay a little for that.
“And there is someone who also wants the trequartista role and runs his mouth. Anyway, we suffered two very avoidable goals.”
Conte did not think that Serbian veteran Aleksandar Kolarov was struggling as a central defender.
“I think that’s his role now, the best one. Inevitably there is work to be done with him, but also with all the others.
“But I repeat, we have played the game. Taking advantage of those opportunities, we would be here talking about a beautiful and winning Inter.”
The former Chelsea and Juventus coach did not want to discuss the departure of Diego Godin or the lack of a new centre back arriving.
“I don’t talk about the market, you know that very well. Whatever happened was a considered situation, evaluated with the club and the managers.
“It is up to me to train and bring the squad to the top. You have to ask market questions to those who are right to discuss it.”
Finally, Conte touched on whether his squad is missing a strong, ball winning midfielder.
“Honestly, if you see the game again, Barella has gotten there a lot. In fact, the characteristics of Niccolò are just those, I see myself a bit in him. Then he is better than me and can become a top-player.
“In our system, all midfielders often come to the same conclusion.”
AC Milan’s win over the Nerazzurri means that they are now firmly top of the league table, three points ahead of second place Atalanta.
Inter are down in sixth place, and will be looking ahead to their next game against German side Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League next week.
