Inter manager Antonio Conte has shared his belief that in order for his team to improve, they must make it past the Champions League group stage, something that the Nerazzurri club have failed to do in the past two seasons.

Inter are in Champions League group B alongside 13 time Champions League winners Real Madrid, Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach and Ukrainian powerhouses Shakhtar Donetsk.

“If we want to improve what we did a year ago in the Champions League, we must try to get past the group stage,” he explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, which was broadcast a short time ago.

“The boys know very well that we are the arbiters of our destiny and it must all depend on us. We must try to do our best compared to last year.”

The former Italian national team boss was then asked about what kind of team tomorrow night’s opponents Borussia Monchengladbach are. He also spoke on where there is a need for improvement from his team.

“They are an excellent team, who have good organisation, have strong players up front and are good in one on one situations.

“We have to be careful but we think about ourselves, we think about our football and we have to be good and more precise when we have scoring situations by exploiting them.

“We need to improve in non-possession situations when we attack. We need to have respect for the opponent but a lot depends on us.”

The 51-year-old manager has been in charge of Inter in the Summer of 2019 and very nearly guided Inter to a Serie A and Europa League double last term.

“He guided Inter to a second place finish in Serie A, where they finished one point off winners Juventus and the Europa League final, which they lost to Sevilla, 3-2.
