Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta has revealed that Achraf Hakimi, the latest player to test positive for COVID-19 in the Inter squad, was tested 48 hours ago.

“We received news from UEFA after the tests performed 48 hours before the match by their laboratory, news that Hakimi had tested positive,” he explained to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia moments ago live on air, just before kick off between Inter and Borussia Monchengladbach in their Champions League group stage group B opener at San Siro.

Marotta then went on to discuss the possibility of squad sizes being expanded in Serie A in order to help the season to continue given the large numbers of players in Serie A teams who have tested positive for COVID-19.

“The protocol was drawn up in rigid fashion to ensure we could finish the season. The rules state that as long as there are under 10 positive cases, no action needs to be taken.

“However, if we were to expand the existing squads, then that would give more options and allow for a more entertaining spectacle in the games.”

The former Juventus executive was then asked about the decision to field Alexis Sanchez from the start alongside Romelu Lukaku in the Inter attack opposed to Lautaro Martinez beside Lukaku.

“This is an anomalous season, so apart from the Sword of Damocles represented by COVID, we also have a compressed fixture list.

“It makes squad rotation even more important, especially after international duty with trips halfway across the world.”

Marotta was also asked about whether Lautaro would be renewing his contract with the club to which he responded: “We have an excellent rapport with Lautaro and there is absolutely no rush over a new contract.”
