Tonight’s Champions League group stage opener against Borussia Monchengladbach is Inter’s first game to date this season where the result is really important according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The result of this match is even more important than this past weekend’s Derby della Madonnina, which Inter lost 2-1. This is the case because unlike in the league, where there is plenty of time left to right any wrongs, there is not the same amount of time in the Champions League.

If Inter were to lose tonight’s match against Borussia Monchengladbach they would be facing a real uphill battle to finish in at least second place in the group due to the fact their next two group stage games are away to Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid.

Last season Inter slipped up on match day one against Slavia Prague as they drew 1-1 and in the end this result played a big part in Inter’s failure to qualify for the knockout stages.
