Inter manager Antonio Conte has shared his belief that his team were deserving of more than a draw from their Champions League group stage opener at home to Borussia Monchengladbach last night.

Inter dominated the match for large spells and Borussia Monchengladbach produced very little yet the German’s managed to leave Milan with a point to their name as the match finished 2-2.

Inter took the lead shortly after half time but Borussia Monchengladbach found a way back into the game via a penalty on the hour mark.

They then scored with just six minutes left of normal time and looked like they were set to record an unexpected win but Inter had other ideas as they equalised in the final moments.

“I think that we deserved much more than the final result. Gladbach are an excellent opponent, they have good tactical organisation, are physical and fast, but they suffered from our intensity and our rhythms,” he explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, following the match at San Siro.

“I am sorry because we are talking about a draw with a team who had two shots taken. I don’t remember Handanovic making saves, we dominated the match.

“All we can do is thank the players who are taking on the problems footballing wise and not just at this moment.”

The 51-year-old former Italian national team boss then went on to sing the praises of striker Romelu Lukaku, who scored both of Inter’s goals in the match against the Bundesliga outfit.

“I am happy for Romelu because he is growing exponentially, when he arrived I considered him a diamond in the rough and he is now working on the technical-tactical discourse. For me he still has room for improvement.”
